This work conveys a subtle sense of humor. One of the fan’s outer ribs depicts a group of foods that ripen as summer approaches, a theme known as jianchun, “a farewell meal to spring.” Amid the seasonal fruits and vegetables—bamboo shoots and cherries—a puffer fish appears. The folding fan was a gift to the artist Jin Xiya’s teenage daughter, Laiyu, which may explain the inclusion of such a playful and unconventional motif.
