Saint Peter
This panel and another in the Lehman Collection (1975.1.14) formed the lateral panels of a small polyptych (multi-paneled altarpiece), four additional panels from which are in the Pinacoteca, Siena. The Lehman panels are painted on their backs with a fictive stone design, suggesting a freestanding altarpiece meant to be seen from both sides. The saints carry their typical attributes: the Magdalen holds the jar of ointment she used to prepare Christ’s body for burial, and Peter bears the keys to heaven and the church. The unknown artist was closely affiliated with Lippo Memmi’s workshop, one of the most important in fourteenth-century Siena.
