Service vessel with bamboo, plum blossoms, butterflies, and birds
These vessels reflect a luxury lifestyle in prosperous southern China during the thirteenth-century Song and Yuan periods. Silver wares often served as high-end dishes in wealthy households and upscale restaurants. The examples here were likely used for tea, perhaps accompanied by fruit and snacks. The same forms appear in contemporaneous ceramic and lacquer works.
